AN INTRODUCTION TO VIHANGAM YOGA

Vihangam Yoga is also known as Sahaja Yoga, Brahma Vidya,
Para Vidya or Madhu Vidya. Vihangam literally means a bird. Just as a bird leaves
its base on the earth to fly high in the sky, so does Vihangam Yoga enable the
human soul (Atma) to cut off its moorings in the Prakriti (phenomenal world) and
realize its true and free nature. So long as the Atma, which is a conscious entity, is
shackled to the inert Prakriti, it identifies itself with the mind, the senses and the
body. In this state, it is not capable of realizing its true and free nature and all its
knowledge is erroneous. It is not properly oriented to know its own self, the
Supreme Self (Paramatma) or the Prakriti. Its gets all the knowledge through the
mind, which is always directed towards the phenomenal world. Only when the
mind is steadied and then directed away from the phenomenal world by the
practice of yoga, does it get the correct orientation to realize the truth. In the
practice of Vihangam Yoga, the mind is lifted to its original source, the Akshara.
Only in this state the Atma, undisturbed by the mind, realizes its nature (Atma
Gyana). All the other prevalent practices of Yoga or meditation stop short of this
realization. They are all based on the mind and the intellect and do not go beyond
them. Even a prolonged practice of these processes of meditation leads the
practitioners from one mental exercise to another. Realization of the true nature of
the Self (Atma) is not possible by these various types of meditation. And unless
the true conscious nature of the Atma is realized, its union with the Paramatma,
the ultimate aim of Yoga (union of the self with the Universal Soul), is an
impossibility. The help and guidance of Sadguru is essential in the practice of
Vihangam Yoga. There is an Eternal Sadguru described in Vedas as Sukrit Deo. All
knowledge of the conscious as well as inert existence has come from the Eternal
Sadguru through the ages. Vihangam Yoga, which can be called the science of
conscious entities, has been taught by the Sadguru to his disciples and handed
down from time to time to evolved souls who have been designated as Sadguru
and empowered to teach this science. In recent years one such evolved soul
appeared in the body of Sadafal Deoji Maharaj, who was guided in his meditation,
lasting for seventeen years, by the Eternal Sadguru and ultimately empowered by
him to teach Vihangam Yoga to the world. Sadguru Sadafal Deoji Maharaj has
written extensively and his personal experiences have been compiled in a book of
verses, SWARVEDA. During his life time (1884-1954) he traveled through the
length and breadth of India trying to propagate this science of Vihangam Yoga. He
trained up his son, Acharya Dharma Chandra Deoji Maharaj, and before
relinquishing his body in Yoga Samadhi at Jhunsi near Allahabad, he empowered
him to act as the next Sadguru. Even on relinquishing his mortal form, he kept on
giving necessary guidance in so many words which people present at the spot
could distinctly hear. The soul of the great yogi still guides the aspirants as
promised by him. The present Sadguru, Acharya Swatantra Deoji Maharaj, has
been handed down the same knowledge and authority to propagate this science
throughout the world. He ordinarily resides at Vrittikut Ashram near Pakri in Ballia
District of Uttar Pradesh. This Ashram was established by Sadafal Deoji Maharaj in
the year 1926. Originally it was just an artificially built cave in which he did most
of his practices in meditation and where he met Eternal Sadguru, Sukrit Deoji for
the first time. The Eternal Sadguru appeared many times at this Ashram. This
ashram is the center from which the practioner of Vihangam Yoga get inspiration
and guidance.
Whatever has been written in this book has been taken from the writings of
Sadguru Sadafal Deoji Maharaj. It gives a brief idea of the principles of Vihangam
Yoga and is not a guide in the practice of the science of conscious. As a matter of
fact, guidance for the practice can be given by a Sadguru alone or a person
authorized by him.
I must mention in all humility the immense kindness of Acharya Sri Swatantra
Deoji Maharaj at whose lotus feet..
